Why myFIcapsule

Why:

I’ve always had a desire to write, but I was inspired to document our story by JL Collins. JL was incredibly intentional about making it clear he wrote for his daughter, and I wanted to do the same; write for my son, so he would know how we got where we are. I created myFIcapsule much later than I originally wanted to for a couple reasons. First, fear, second lack of know how or deep enough desire. I created it because it is incredibly rare that you find someone that actually cares or wants to talk about the types of things the FIRE community focuses on. Everyone likes the idea of being rich but few have the desire to talk about how to do it. I needed a platform to get this out of my head in hopes that it would help others who may actually read and listen. The result, myFIcapsule.

Lifestyle:

We aren’t minimalist FI individuals that live on $30k a year, there is nothing wrong with that path but it isn’t our situation. We get that we are different in that aspect. I listen to countless podcasts or read blogs about people going FI on $25-40k a year. That’s just not us, and we’re ok with that. We are a higher earning family and while our lifestyle is higher than many in the FI community, we live significantly below our means while still having some spendy experiences and not feeling guilty about it. We could supercharge our FI process by downgrading certain aspects of our expenses but we simply don’t want to, and are on pace for FI on a reasonable timeline that we can live with and subscribe to. We’ll show and explain more in podcasts and blogs where we choose to optimize and where we willingly splurge.

Why Capsule?

Capsule carries multiple definitions and meanings. It signifies capturing this journey with this blog and accompanying podcasts/videos serving as the capsule. It allows us to look back and capture knowledge that will become further and further forgotten as more time passes. Finally, I buried a time capsule when I was a kid at an apartment complex that I lived in but couldn’t even begin to guess where it was to begin looking and see what “treasures” we left for our future selves. I don’t want my family, professional and financial journey forgotten, this capsule is a vessel to share this knowledge with anyone that can benefit and provide a roadmap for my son to consider.

FI no RE:

myFIcapsule isn’t just a name that kind of rhymes or something I tried to make sound cool. We left out the RE because we have no immediate plans to retire upon reaching Financial Independance. Many before me have said and will continue to say that those can retire early almost never stay retired, they shift their focus to other projects, volunteering or starting a business. This is no different with me, I can’t imagine having nothing but time on my hands with nothing to chase after, create, or improve upon. We want to pursue the FI so we can pursue whatever we want in our free time.
